Corey Monks (she/her)
Assistant Professor, BS162 Course Coordinator
I am a small-town northern Michigan girl who has landed in Lansing with her husband,
daughter, two dogs, geriatric cat, and two pet beetles named Ringo and Helen. I enjoy
spending my free time outside and can frequently be found looking at plants and bugs
and trying to befriend the crows that live in my neighborhood.
My research background is in aquatic ecology, though my dissertation work involved
understanding how student attitudes affect intrinsic motivation to learn and learning
outcomes. My teaching emphasizes understanding biological core ideas through the lens
of scientific practices; learning what scientists know by doing what scientists do.
My classroom approach is centered on student sense of belonging and developing a learning
community within which we are all learning together and on the same team working toward
the same goal.
I am currently the curriculum coordinator for BS162, but have also taught BS172, BS182H,
and BS192H here at MSU. I also really love bogs.
